Biography
“What I like best about my work is
that I don’t ever do the same thing twice,” says Vince Marchesani, one of the
few EHS consultants who has specialized in this work his entire career. Vince
got his start with laundry-detergent enzymes at Rohm and Haas. “If you stress
the enzyme-producing bugs in their environment, they made more enzymes,” he
says. “So I took a course in environmental science to learn how to increase the
stress. I kept taking courses, and before I knew it, I found myself in a
developing field.”
Now on
the ground floor of a new movement, and as part of his long-term strategy to
develop expertise in his chosen field, Vince moved to the regulatory side. During
his tenure with the New Jersey Bureau of Air Pollution Control, he wrote many
of the state’s new regulations. Other work with planning commissions drew
him into the development of EHS management systems. “I’ve always been
interested in the practical side of the business,” he says.
From
government, Vince moved across the street to industry: Allied Chemical Company
faced a mammoth cleanup from an environmental exposure they had inadvertently
acquired, and they called on Vince to help solve the problem. “They told me,
‘Come and don’t be prepared to go home – we’re going to create an environmental
audit system for manufacturing plants.’ We did that in one week, and when it
was done, we did 77 audits of plants around the country in six weeks. This was
the first audit of its type, and now it’s done regularly.”
With a good
report from the audit, Vince found a new challenge at ICI Americas, which had
just created a department of 78 people to focus on EHS issues. Vince was invited to direct the environmental program, and went on to
develop the company’s environmental audit procedure. He was also ICI Americas’ environmental
liaison to Europe.
From ICI, a
friend drew him to Basell, where he served as Vice President of NA Corporate Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE)
Affairs. One of the activities that pleased him most here was developing new
approaches to crisis management. “What a fascinating experience!” he says. “We constructed
scenarios, very real, even a television crew in the hallway. One scenario was
scheduled for 45 minutes every morning for four days, but I had to throw people
out after two or three hours! There’s a lot to crisis management that people never
suspect.”
In addition
to his expertise in crisis management and auditing, Vince is also well
experienced in mergers and acquisitions, having been involved with both at ICI
and Basell. In his spare time, he enjoys painting and playing piano and guitar.
He and his wife, an ex-teacher of European history, have three children.
