Perhaps the biggest challenge Tim Walsh has faced in his 15-year
environmental consulting career in Asia was
the massive Indonesian tsunami of 2004:
“I’d just left on a sabbatical from
ERM (Environmental Resources Management) when the Tsunami happened, and I
volunteered to help in Aceh, nearest the epicenter. There were dead bodies all
around, which was quite scary, and there was a huge amount of destroyed
buildings and disaster waste. They asked me to advise them. The first thing was
to get access to clear the debris. The second was to get the survivors working
so they’d have something to do. We employed at one time about 2,500 people
clearing the debris. Then we designed programs to recycle materials. We used
the concrete and brick rubble for roads, and we sent wood to carpentry
workshops to be recycled into school furniture. We sold the metals and put the
money back into the program.
“Many of the government workers
were dead, and garbage was festering in the streets, so we started a program to
collect it, and we were designing landfills on the back of envelopes. Today we’re
trying to create livelihoods from waste management and recyclable materials,
and we’re building a permanent waste-management infrastructure. I’m still
spending 50% of my time on this – I never did get a sabbatical!”
Tim was “internationalized” at an
early age, since his father worked for the British Overseas Development
Administration in Ethiopia
and the Seychelles.
Tim completed his PhD in Chemical Engineering in the UK
and immediately went to work as a consultant for ERM, soon wangling a spot in ERM’s
small Hong Kong office. Within five years,
he’d helped the office grow from six people to 75 – and with nowhere further to
go in Hong Kong, Tim opened an office in Malaysia, now his home country. He directed
ERM activities around Southeast Asia from
there until his “sabbatical” in 2004.
As work in Aceh ratcheted down, Tim
left ERM to consult on his own and with his friend Andrew Young. Today the two
men oversee Pilko’s Asian consultancy.
“We live in Asia, we know
Asia, we’ve worked in most of the countries, and we know
their regulations and the way they do things,” Tim says. “I’ve managed a lot of
multidisciplinary projects, where there were environmental, health, safety, and
social issues all wrapped up together. It’s good to be able to help
corporations and the environment, and it’s been really nice to help people who
needed help very directly.”
