Biography
“What I like most about consulting is the diversity,” Marty says. “There are so many opportunities to apply the lessons learned from previous experiences to a variety of client issues with a very positive impact.” And Marty has plenty of experience to apply, having risen to top management levels at both DuPont and Henkel/Cognis.
Marty started his career as a DuPont research chemist but quickly ascended to Operations Director at various titanium dioxide plants in the DuPont circuit. Moving on to Corporate, Marty focused first on business economics and then on EHS management. In his seven years as Environmental Manager, Marty implemented new “competency-based” systems while working with the DuPont legal department to interpret new EHS regulations and their impact on DuPont's operations. He also managed compliance for the last major green-field site that DuPont opened in the U.S.
Recognizing talent, DuPont moved Marty to Brazil, where he managed DuPont’s largest South American facility (four plants and three business divisions). No sooner was Marty fluent in Brazilian Portuguese than DuPont sent him to Korea, where he managed the construction and start-up of three manufacturing facilities for four business divisions.
By this time, Marty and his wife were ready to return home, and Henkel provided the perfect opportunity: a job as Corporate Vice President over manufacturing, EHS and Quality for all North American operations. Henkel had acquired six separate companies in North America; Marty integrated these, acquired seven more, and spun off several non-core businesses. Along the way he implemented Responsible Care and various ISO certifications, Six Sigma for manufacturing, and SAP for accounting. His success propelled him to Senior Vice President, where he added Human Resources and Organizational Development to his roster of responsibilities. His final job at Henkel was to carve out Henkel’s Cognis chemicals division for sale, a divestiture that he completed successfully in 2002.
Today, Marty brings his extensive international management experience to Pilko. “Every day is a new learning experience,” he says, “and a new chance to use what I’ve learned. It’s an adventure – every situation is unique.” When Marty is not solving problems for Pilko clients, you can find him on the golf course or traveling with his wife someplace in the world.
