Alex Coles is an accomplished North American Energy Executive with over 30 years of leadership experience in the energy sector, spanning refining operations, capital projects, mergers & acquisitions, and energy transition.
Alex is a former Vice President & General Manager, Refining & Supply at Parkland Corporation, where he led all operations at the Burnaby Refinery, leading the integration of Chevron Canada’s British Columbia Refinery and Terminal assets into Parkland, delivering a greater than 200% improvement in profitability for the Refining & Supply assets while maintaining strong safety and environmental performance. He also led the development and execution of the refinery’s energy transition strategy, including positioning the facility as a world leader in FCCU co-processing renewable feedstocks and achieving Canada’s first commercial production of Sustainable Aviation Fuel.
Prior to Parkland Corporation, Alex held senior executive roles with CVR Energy and Irving Oil, where he led large-scale refining operations, major capital programs, including participation in multi-billion-dollar refinery expansions, business transformation and growth initiatives. His experience spans operations, engineering, maintenance, business development, competitiveness improvement and expansion and project execution across North America.
Alex holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and an Executive MBA from the University of New Brunswick and has completed the Institute of Corporate Directors’ Directors Education Program (ICD.D) and has held Board positions with West Coast Marine Response Corporation, Industry and various not for profit organizations. His governance expertise includes Strategy, ESG, risk, capital allocation, stakeholder and Indigenous relations, regulatory frameworks, and low-carbon fuels policy.
