Hein Tils is a globally respected technical governance expert and energy executive with over 30 years of leadership in complex capital projects and operations across the oil, gas, and renewable energy sectors. Known for his ability to bridge strategy and execution, Hein has served as a technical board member for more than five multi-billion-dollar strategic investment projects, covering both conventional and emerging energy ventures. His leadership has been instrumental in shaping major initiatives in LNG, gas-to-liquids (GTL), hydrogen, offshore wind, and integrated renewables.

As General Manager of Future Assets, Hein led the development of Shell’s proprietary “Asset of the Future” framework, which has been implemented across more than 10 major assets. This framework enables long-term asset visioning, integrated delivery roadmaps, and cross-functional alignment to accelerate readiness and unlock sustained value. Hein’s approach is grounded in his engineering roots and supported by deep operational knowledge, ensuring that future-state planning is always informed by front-line execution realities.

Hein also brings deep specialization in performance improvement, commissioning and start-up, and operations readiness. He played a pivotal role in the establishment of the utilities organization for the Pearl GTL facility in Qatar, leading a multidisciplinary team of over 270 operations, maintenance, and technical professionals through start-up and transition to sustained operations. Throughout his career, Hein has coached executive leaders and led operational excellence programs that have delivered measurable improvements in safety, reliability, and cost competitiveness.

Hein’s ability to build and sustain high-performing teams in diverse, multicultural environments is core to his leadership style. He is a valued peer coach to senior leaders and a consistent voice for collaboration, systems thinking, and long-term resilience. Fluent in Dutch and English, he has worked extensively across Europe, North America, the Middle East, and Asia, and continues to advise boards, joint ventures, and executive sponsors on technical assurance and future asset strategy.

Hein holds a PhD in Chemical Engineering from Eindhoven University of Technology, with additional advanced executive training in performance improvement, commissioning and start-up, and operational excellence. He is based in the Eindhoven BrainPort region of The Netherlands, and lives by his personal and professional motto: “Make the Future by Choice, Not by Chance.”
