Susan Nelson has 30+ years’ experience in the energy industry.  She recently retired from Shell Oil Company and subsequently from PBF Energy as the Health, Safety, Security and Environmental (HSSE) Manager of the Martinez Refinery, a member of the site’s leadership team accountable for delivery of a successful HSSE program with strong personal and process safety performance and sustained regulatory compliance.  Susan also previously held the role of Controls and Process Engineering Manager, leading a large, diverse technical organization delivering innovative solutions to optimize refinery operations and profitability.  Prior to that role, Susan was the site’s Business Opportunity and Capital Portfolio Manager as well as leading the Process Engineering-Projects organization which delivered front-end scope development for capital projects.

Earlier in her career, Susan held several positions at the Martinez Refinery such as the Manufacturing Excellence Manager, leading the site’s assurance and work process effectiveness programs; Process Projects Engineer for Capital Projects, developing front end scope for major environmental compliance projects; Light Products Coordinator in Economics & Scheduling, overseeing light product production and distribution; Products & Feedstocks Scheduling Manager in Logistics, overseeing oil movements to, from and within the refinery; and as a Process Engineer for a wide variety of operating units.

Susan is skilled in manufacturing, continuous improvement, management systems, work process excellence, assurance, capital portfolio management, front-end scope development, and HSSE performance and regulatory compliance. She is an established senior leader capable of effectively developing and guiding large, diverse organizations through continuous improvement, optimization and strategic delivery.

Susan received her Bachelor of Science, Chemical Engineering and Materials Science & Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley.
